Britney’s performance at MTV VMAs (Video)

On September 9th, as the clock struck 9:00 PM EST, music enthusiasts across America were glued to the front of their television sets. Not only was MTV hosting their 2007 Video Music Awards in Las Vegas, a city known for its excitement and (sinful) exuberance, but Britney Spears, the indisputable pop icon of the past decade, was set to open the event and deliver a “comeback” performance of her new single, “Gimme More.” The performance comes after a year when Spears publicly shaved her head, went into rehab and fought husband Kevin Federline for custody of their two sons.

Despite all it was a complete disaster on stage and performance is highly criticized by all. Wearing a sparkly black bra and hot pants, the 25-year-old mother-of-two looked bleary eyed and unfit as she struggled to keep up with her energetic backing dancers, who threw themselves around stripper poles in an S+M-inspired set. Cameras revealed celebrity guests, including 50 Cent, scoffing at Britney’s performance, while Rihanna was seen in fits of laughter.

The Associated Press wrote “She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.”

Reuters said “No longer boasting the buff body that helped drive her to international superstardom almost a decade ago, the mother of two moved sluggishly around the stage.”
