Sachin becomes first batsman to score 200 in an ODI

Saeed Anwar stopped six short 13 years ago. Finally, the elusive double century is for the master batsman to have, as he lashed South Africa to all parts of the Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior on Wednesday. Sachin Tendulkar added another feather to his cap when he became the first batsman to cross the 200-run mark in an one-day international.

Tendulkar’s 46th one-day hundred was converted into a double with 25 fours and three sixes, the boundaries alone making up more than a century in his mammoth yet destructive 140-ball effort.

For the Indian batting genius with over 20 years in international cricket, records have fallen by the wayside ever since he took on opening in one-day cricket as Test records continued to break. One-day cricket has seen its last days just yet. But if it has or is nearing to it, Tendulkar’s records are almost certain to be never eclipsed

Bollywood thespian Amitabh Bachchan recently appeared in Ahmedabad to promote his film Paa, rubbed shoulders with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Damodardas Modi and promptly declared his availibility to be the “brand ambassador” of the State of Mahatma Gandhi and the Somnath Temple.

This, on top of his already onerous responsibilities of spreading the good word for brand such as BPL, ICICI, Parker, Luxor, Maruti Versa, Cadbury chocolates, Nerolac Paints, Dabur, Emami, Eveready, Sahara City Homes, D’damas, Binani Cement and Reliance.

My dear Bachchanji, greetings from a Gujarati.

You are indeed a fine actor. You are an intelligent man and a shrewd businessman. But should I believe in your endorsements?

Let’s take a brief look at what you proclaim you believe in (albeit for huge sums of money). BPL, ICICI, Parker and Luxor pens, Maruti Versa, Cadbury chocolates. Nerolac Paints, Dabur, Emami, Eveready, Sahara City Homes, D’damas, Binani Cement, and Reliance. And now Gujarat.

I wonder how you decide what to endorse. Is your house built with Binani Cement? Do you really like Cadbury’s chocolates or do you have to resort to Dabar’s Hajmola (whose efficacy you have earlier checked) after eating them?

And, having endorsed two pens, one very upmarket and one rather down, which one do you use? Have you, except perhaps for the shooting of the ad, ever driven or been driven in a Versa? Do you know whether the Nerolac paint in your home (you do use it, don’t you?) has lead in it that can poison you slowly as it does so many people? Or are the decisions entirely monetary?
